English as Second Language

Our school offers a progressive and challenging program  to develop an individual’s communicative competence. The aim of the ESL department is to teach English to students for meeting their needs as non-native speakers or who have very limited knowledge of the language and providing them with a special curriculum that focuses on developing their English proficiency.

Curriculum

It is a progressive course specially designed to enhance students’ competency with emphasis on the four modalities of English: reading, writing, listening and speaking. All classes target to the student’s advancement in English. The curriculum is applied progressively from Sections 1-12.

Proficiency levels

The following are descriptions are provided to determine the ability of each level  in the basis of the curriculum.

Beginner (Section 1 & 2)

They are considered as students with virtually no functional ability in listening ad writing English. They go through a “ silent period” as a stage of normal second language acquisition.

High Beginner (Sections 3 & 4)

They begin to understand the language and use it in a limited capacity. They usually memorize words/phrases and can comprehend and utitlize according to what is taught.

Intermediate (Sections 5 - 7)

They are able to understand most oral language that pertains to familiar topics but have difficulty comprehending and suing vocabulary, speech and writing contain frequent errors.

High Intermediate (Sections 8 - 10)

The students can function well in most everyday situations but still require academic language support. They have difficulty in understanding text beyond literal level and often commit error in grammar structure and idiom usage.

Advanced (Sections 11 - 12)

They are able to handle most personal, social and academic language. They frequently have problems with complicated literary and academic texts. In this level, the curricular focus is based on literacy skills essential for succes in a grade/ level classroom or mainstream.

High School Bridge Program

A study program intended to address the needs of high school (ESL) students to connect them to the understanding of the language of Mathematics, Science and Social Studies based on their content concepts. The classes will help enhance the student's knowledge on specialized vocabulary by using terminologies of Math, Science and Social studies in English prior to their admission to the mainstream classes.
